Steer Safe
This post is the first on our Website;s newest feature, a blog. Yesterday, April 26th, Chuck Tines sent out an e-mail to the membership asking for input on the subject of steering systems for coaches. It seems one of our members is thinking of buying one and was soliciting information from other members regarding which one to buy. Bill Mahaffey responded that he had the Steer Safe system and liked it enough to move it from his Monaco to his Allegro since it seemed to add some stability when being passed by trucks, etc. I responded with the following paragraph. It then occurred to me that we could probably open a blog on our website to allow all our members to get involved in this and other subjects of interest. Information will be sent to each member in an e-mail describing how to use the blog. We will probably have some glitches along the way but the concept could be interesting and exciting. Many thanks to my son, Ron, for setting this up and being available for troubleshooting as we need him.
I went to the seminar at the Six States Rally in Shawnee last year and heard the Blue Ox Rep talk about steering systems. Blue Ox makes a very nice system that was more attractive to me since it had a button you could push which would ‘correct’ steering when you were traveling in a steady wind coming from the same direction for a prolonged period of time. Several people in the room mentioned that they had the Steer Safe system and wondered if they should take it off their coach and install the Blue Ox system. The Blue Ox representative, to his credit, asked each one several questions about their coach and then told each one that he would not recommend changing. The Steer Save system they had was a very good system and the extra cost was not worth the benefit of the feature I mentioned above. The MAIN REASON for having either system is safety, especially in the case of a front tire blowout — and either one works well for that. Since the Steer Safe system costs a little less than $500.00 and the Blue Ox system costs a little more than $1000.00, I opted for the Steer Safe system. I did not have problems with trucks affecting my coach but I did have a little play in the steering wheel — and the Steer Safe system has reduced that. I feel very good about having the Steer Safe system on the coach. If anyone would like to call me with questions, etc., I would be happy to talk with them about it although I have shared in this note about everything I know.
I have heard John comment several times since installing the system that the steering does seem to be tighter.
